While Google Gemini, the company’s rival to AI-powered chatbots such as ChatGPT, may not be the most accurate large language model, it does have some pretty handy integrations with YouTube, Google Workspace, and Google Maps.
If you watch videos frequently, Google Gemini’s YouTube extension can help you summarize, analyze, and ask questions about the video without having to watch it. It’s not suitable for everyone, but it’s useful if you want to watch long videos but don’t have time to do so.
Enable the Google Gemini YouTube extension
The YouTube extension may not be enabled by default for everyone. The process is also a bit different on a desktop and a smartphone.
1. Open the Gemini app on your phone to enable the YouTube extension.
2. Click on ‘Extensions’ from your profile picture at the top right of the screen.
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and enable the extension “YouTube”.
How to use Google Gemini to summarise YouTube videos
1. Go to YouTube and choose the video to summarise.
2. If you are using a browser, copy the URL from the address bar or press the ‘Share’ button below the video.
3. Paste the URL of the video into Gemini in your favorite browser or phone.
4. Paste the URL into the text field and click on the ‘Summarize the video’ button. Gemini will produce the summary in a few seconds.
According to Google, Gemini can’t summarise all YouTube videos because captions are required. There are also some languages that are not supported, so the answer might vary depending on what language you are typing. Gemini may be accurate for the most part, but large language models are prone to errors, so be careful.
